A content app and a shop are different products

September 6, 2026

People say “an app” and mean two businesses. One publishes information people return to: a guide, a magazine, a station, a parish, a club. The other sells things. The back office, the sections, and the support load are different, even when one company offers both.

A content app

The valuable object is a page someone can open again: a notice, an episode, a trail description, a fixture. Updates are editorial. The risky work is stale facts, not failed payments. Staff need a simple publish button more than they need a warehouse.

A shop

The valuable object is an order. You need products, prices, tax, delivery, and a way to know a payment succeeded. A pretty catalogue that cannot take money is a brochure. A checkout that the builder does not support is a second piece of software, and the brief should say so.

How to choose

If the one-sentence brief is about reading, listening, or finding a place, start with a content plan and refuse shop add-ons until someone asks to buy. If the brief is about taking payment, price the shop plan first and treat articles as a side. Mixing both on day one is how small teams end up maintaining two products and publishing neither.
